Germ of Life: Digital Drought Risk Management enabling the drought mitigation and adaptation strategies for the restoration of the ecosystem equilibrium in Mediterranean European Countries

The Germ of Life project aims at developing, test and uptake a drought risk management preventive approach based on a set of jointly developed and adapted solutions based on: (i) newly available data, (ii) drought risk prediction for the territorial monitoring systems and timely warning of drought conditions, (iii) a vulnerability assessment tool enhancing the coordination and cooperation of stakeholders, and (iv) an innovation procurement platform for innovative NBS and technological solutions supporting risk-adaptation strategies.

General aims

The main objective of the Germ of Life project is promoting climate change adaptation and monitoring ecosystem vulnerability, resilience, considering ecosystem-based approaches.

CMCC role:
CMCC is involved into the WP1 activities and leads WP2. The main role of CMCC is on the exploitation of Earth observations, climate data and algorithms to calculate compound indicators and/or proxies of multi-faceted (meteorological, hydrological, agro-ecological) droughts and their impacts on the soil-vegetation-water processes and resources. CMCC will design procedures to combine and integrated such data, with particular emphasis to big data analytics and machine learning.

Manuela Balzarolo is the technical leader of the Germ of Life project and she will take care of the technical implementation of the project.

Activities
CMCC in the frame of WP1 Requirements, Best Practices and Action plans assessment for the Development of the joint solutions’ will lead the following activities:
A1.1 – Review of existing drought indices and formulation of new indicators/proxies that are potentially useful for drought detection and impact quantification.
A.1.4 – Adapting existing solutions for Drought risk prediction.
In the frame of WP2 ‘Test activities and Evaluation of Solutions’, CMCC leads the WP2 and the following activity:
A2.3 – Test results evaluation.
CMCC will contribute to all activities of the project development.

Expected results
The Germ of Life project expects to build and technologically evolve existing operational models for the implementation of a proactive drought management. Germ of life will make a step forward in the automation and precision of the state of soil and vegetation risk assessment thanks to data analyses, automation of processes and advances in analysis and actionable knowledge from the monitoring and data-driven solutions in place.
