CHANGE GAME – A game-based learning solution, which helps to raise awareness and improve understanding of the complex transformational challenges faced by humanity when dealing with climate change

”Change Game” is an innovative, interactive tool for educating children (12+) and young adults about climate change. It leverages
the potential of video games to represent the complexity of the climate system and its interactions with humankind and with
natural ecosystems. Scientifically grounded, the game aims to encourage a debate inside and outside the classroom about the
system innovations required to become a net zero emissions and resilient society. Accompanying materials will support teachers and educators in their facilitative role, helping them foster a better understanding about the underlying assumptions that govern the climate change process. Such a participatory process will also encourage the identification of innovative solutions to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Change Game will be developed in collaboration with Melazeta SrL, a company specialized in the design and implementation of applied games for educational and marketing purposes.

General Aims
“Change Game” wants to leverage the potential of this popular tool (video games) to process climate-related information in a fun, educational and interactive way that will increase climate literacy among children (12+) and young adults. Players will be put in control of the world and their destiny, they will decide which and how many resources to use to advance their civilization, but they will also have to deal with the consequences of their decisions.

CMCC role
CMCC is coordinating and supervising all the deliverables of the project, interacting with the EIT Climate- KIC network, science museums and other education organizations.
Building on its expertise within the center, CMCC will ensure the game is scientifically grounded, but also engaging and entertaining, thanks to its extensive experience in climate communication and in making scientific content relevant and compelling for a non-expert audience.

Activities
The game will be developed following a “Game Thinking” methodology for the design and prototyping phases.
Educational material based on climate change science and its impacts will be developed for players and teachers/educators to accompany the videogame.

Expected results
The first version of Change Game and the support materials will be released to the public in the autumn.
