MISSION: MaritIme juSt in time optimiSatION Interoperable Port Call and Voyage Optimization tool

The MISSION project will eliminate bottlenecks of the overall maritime supply chain creating significant economic advantages for direct stakeholders and environmental benefits for society. By enabling collaboration among stakeholders and allowing ship schedules to be synchronised, ship operations and port services will be optimised, thus enhancing the efficiency of maritime operations and reducing the fuel consumption and GHG emissions. The project will demonstrate the benefits and challenges of MISSION specifically for three shipping segments, Tramp (bulk and tanker) RoRo, and container ship traffic, connecting ports in the European seas of Spain, Italy, Greece and Lithuania. MISSION’s port call optimisation and end-to-end orchestration of different traffic types will be built on data sharing platforms, with reference to harmonised standards and provide application programming interfaces for interoperability.

General aims

Through the provisioning of a fully digitalised voyage and port call optimisation system for existing and new routes and services, MISSION aims at enhancing ship operations efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and related GHG emissions by 10-20%.  

CMCC role
CMCC participates in WP2 (Resilient & Scalable IT-Infrastructure), WP3 (Voyage, Fleet, and Port Call Analytics), WP4 (Demonstration Cases for RoRo traffic), WP6 (Dissemination and exploitation), and WP7 (Project management and administration).

CMCC will lead task T2.4 (“User-friendly visualisation and decision support tools”) and participate to tasks T3.3 (“Voyage optimisation”), T3.4 (“Simulation of navigational safety”), T4.3 (“RoRo Shipping Demo Case: Planning, Integration Activities, and Implementation”), T6.1 (“Communication-Dissemination Strategy, Roadmap and coordination with other projects”), T6.2 (“Exploitation strategy, including IPR”), T7.1 (“Internal project management and coordination”), T7.2 (“Financial and accounting management”), T7.3 (“Internal communication and data management”), T7.4 (“Quality assurance and risk management”).

Furthermore, CMCC will develop the open-source VISIR-2 model for computing optimal ship routes. New ship performance curves will be obtained and an algorithm to predict optimal routes of given duration will be developed to feed the MISSION data sharing infrastructure. 

Activities
MISSION project is structured in seven work packages, with its technical developments, demonstrations and validations distributed across five works packages (WP1-WP5, with WP4 encompassing demonstration cases for the three types of ship traffic considered). Simultaneously, WP6 focuses on dissemination, communication and exploitations of the results, while WP concerns project management and coordination. 

Expected results
MISSION project specific objectives are translated into several expected outcomes.
Particularly MISSION aims at generating:
-A set of harmonised standards in line with IMO/ISO
-Seamless collaborations among stakeholders 
-A secure and interoperable data sharing infrastructure
-Port call and voyage optimisation and analytics tools for three traffic types, in six seaports and five shipping lines
-Regulatory compliance evaluation report and recommendations for standards to incentivise shared costs and benefits between stakeholders
-Navigation safety and operational risk assessment
-Green business models
-Guidelines for policymakers
