Abstract
Estimating greenhouse gas emissions by atmospheric observations and inverse modelling (top-down) has become an important research tool, applied to different gases and on various scales. Comparisons with reported (bottom-up) inventories can reveal significant differences in magnitude and trends that require an in-depth discussion between the two communities. Communicating inverse modelling results, primarily obtained by atmospheric scientists and statistical data experts, to national inventory teams may be hindered by differences in expectations, various levels of understanding of the limitations and uncertainties of emitting processes and top-down modelling, and, last but not least, mutual ignorance of technical jargon.
In this webinar, we will share our experiences from two decades of communicating inverse modelling results to national inventory teams in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. What are common misunderstandings that can be avoided? How to best communicate the uncertainties and limitations in our atmospheric modelling and extracting understanding from the results? We will showcase examples of where top-down estimates and bottom-up reporting were at different levels of disagreement over the years and how our results impacted the reporting process. Examples include trends in UK methane emissions, F-gas emissions in both the UK and Switzerland as well as nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture and industry.
