Abstract
Despite their small amplitudes, Mediterranean tides play an important role on the dynamics of the whole Mediterranean Sea. Tides are found to affect the general circulation of the Basin as well as the dynamics of extreme events that, due to climate change, are becoming more frequent and intense in the whole Mediterranean area.
The Mediterranean Analysis and Forecasting System (MedFS), operational at CMCC in the framework of the Copernicus Marine Service, represents a perfect framework to analyze the contribution of tides on the Mediterranean Sea dynamics.
The webinar will start with a brief description of the characteristics of tides in the Mediterranean Sea and of the implementation of these in the MedFS system. An evaluation of the MedFS skill in terms of sea level tidal amplitude and phase representation with respect to observed and numerical data will follow. Moreover, the main impacts induced by including the explicit representation of tides in the system will be emphasized. Then, the webinar will focus on the Adriatic Sea dynamics, in particular, a Venice Acqua Alta event occurred in November 2019 will be analyzed. For this specific event, the contribution of single barotropic and baroclinic processes in the the sea level increase will be assessed with the aim of highlighting the importance of the explicit representation of tides in forecasting extreme events.
