We use the term External Environments to refer to the essential interfaces to remote computational resources (e.g. data repositories, real time data streams, high performance networks, and computing clouds) that advanced applications may need to access and utilize. The use of such resources is already typical for many high-end applications and they form a critical part of the working environment for most, if not all, major research communities. In the following, the External Environment Distributed data repositories is discussed as a contribution to the International Exascale Software Project (IESP).
The research leading to these results has received funding from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea under the GEMINA project.
