SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 – Sea Level Rise Scenarios along the Mediterranean Coasts

This project aims to respond to the need for prevention from natural disasters in Mediterranean coastal caused by the combined impact of sea level rise (SLR) and land subsidence (LS) in the major river deltas, lagoons and reclamation areas previously identified in the SAVEMEDCOASTS project, being the coastal zones most exposed to flooding of the Mediterranean region.

Duration
24 months from 02/12/2019 to 02/07/2022

General Aims
SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 is aimed at integrating climate change scenarios into disaster risk assessment and disaster risk management of the most exposed river deltas and lagoons of the Mediterranean Region so to increase the availability and use of scientific knowledge on disaster, as explicitly stated in the new upcoming Union Civil Protection Mechanism, by developing 1) multi-hazard approach for risk assessment, and 2) macro-regional risk assessment integrating climate change scenarios including cascading impacts.

CMCC Role
Partner of the project

Expected results

Improved knowledge base on disaster risk assessment and facilitate the sharing of scientific knowledge and information on climate-change scenarios, including among Member States that share common risks;

Enhanced understanding of current/future coastal conditions to support civil protection planning and improve disaster risk reduction;

Enhanced information and improved databases for risk assessments;

Community’s knowledge transfer favored by raising their awareness and their capability to adapt to climate change effects which allows transferring part of the ownership of climate change governance to local communities;

Increased cooperation amongst geosciences, civil protection, epidemiologists and decision-makers, favoring the creation of a cross-border network and introducing new practices to approach key actors, decision-makers, and stakeholders to the understating and use of information and methods, normally restricted to the scientific community;

Education on natural hazard in targeted communities living in subsiding deltas at high risk of flooding.
