NEVERMORE: New Enabling Visions and tools for End-useRs and stakeholders thanks to a common MOdeling appRoach towards a climatE neutral and resilient society

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on Climate Change 2021 is a “code red for humanity” according to the UN Secretary-General. It is thus essential to work on a climate resilient society. This entails both climate neutrality and mitigation of those impacts of climate change that are making themselves felt already. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of improved translations of scientific insights into policy and social practice.

General aims

The NEVERMORE project aims to develop an integrated common assessment framework (for modelling, simulating and evaluating impacts of both climate change and policy measures) tailored to the needs of different stakeholders and end-users (public and private actors, decision-makers and citizens). It will include information on climate, Earth Systems, human and impacts models in a robust, reliable, detailed and transparent way, for delivering multi-sectoral climate impact assessments under consistent and integrated socio-economic and climate scenarios. The NEVERMORE approach integrates the information from physical modelling of impacts and risk analysis methodologies and aligns them across different scales: from national, EU and global scales to local and regional scales via five representative case studies that represent various socio-ecological systems. NEVERMORE helps to better understand the interactions between climate change impacts and mitigation and adaptation options to deliver sound technical and policy recommendations towards a climate neutral and resilient society.

CMCC role
CMCC leads WP5 that aims at developing a comprehensive adaptation and mitigation policies and measures catalogue, consistent across scales (from EU/Global to local) and across different policy sectors. The catalogue will set the basis and requirements for the modelling activities, in order to identify suitable adaptation and mitigation measures at local scale (5 case studies) and integrated into the WILIAM IAM for the upscaling of the measures. CMCC is also responsible for the evaluation and provision of technical and policy recommendation at local level.
In addition, CMCC contribute to the production of high-resolution climate data for the case studies, will collaborate in the design and development of NEVERMORE tools, and is in charge of the train-the-trainer activities including activities for the gamification and educational purposes.

Activities
Task 1.2. Scientific and technical coordination
Task 2.5. Identification of the socio-technological requirements
Task 3.2. Downscaling of climate information
Task 5.1. Review of mitigation and adaptation policies and measures across all relevant sectors at different scales (from local to global level)
Task 5.2. Common KPI-driven evaluation panel of policies and measures
Task 5.3. Holistic analysis of mitigation and adaptation policies and measures considering synergies, co-benefits and trade-offs
Task 5.4. Development of a catalogue of mitigation and adaptation policies and measures at different scales
Task 5.6. Evaluation of policy scenarios in the IAM to provide recommendations
Task 6.6. Evaluation of adaptation and mitigation policies and measures in the case studies
Task 7.1. Design of the common ICT toolkit architecture
Task 7.2. NEVERMORE data storage
Task 7.3. Design and development of the different ICT solutions
Task 7.4. Development of the frontend for the different ICT solutions
Task 7.5. Continuous integration, testing and validation
Task 8.5. Train-the-trainer activities including activities for gamification and educational purposes

Expected results
Develop integrated models and tools for simulating and assessing the impacts and risks of climate change, as well as to realise new interactive digital tools useful for citizens and policy-makers to learn about future scenarios and to make mitigation and adaptation policies more effective.
