IDEATION (InlanD watErs in the digitAl Twin OceaN) is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. IDEATION is based on a cross-border cooperation, involvement, and commitment of stakeholders at European level by following the Water-oriented Living Labs (WoLLs) approach. Stakeholders will be engaged via Multi-Stakeholder Forums (MSF), using a range of different engagement methodologies (e.g., focus groups, workshops, interviews, questionnaires) depending on goals of the engagement and specificities of the context. A comprehensive review will be performed to make an open knowledge inventory for inland water systems (OpenKIWAS). IDEATION will co-design the IDEATION reference architecture defining a set of building blocks, interfaces and standards to make data, models and technologies interoperable and integrable with the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO). Putting together all the results from the MSF, OpenKIWAS, and the IDEATION reference architecture, a roadmap for the integration of inland waters in the Digital Twin Ocean will be created providing a preliminary breakdown of the work, with priorities of implementation, into a stepped approach.
24 months from 01/06/2024 to 31/05/2026
General aims
IDEATION project aims to prepare the development of the digital twin of the inland waters (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, snow, and ice) addressing activities to be developed and to make it integrated and interoperable with the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) for a unified digital twin of ocean and waters (addressing the hydrosphere as a whole).
CMCC role
The activities of CMCC include OpenKIWAS: Open Knowledge Inventory for Inland Water Systems development in frame of WP3 where CMCC leads the Task 3.3.2 (Catalogue of data and services from national meteorological organisations). This task deals specifically with the identification and cataloguing of data and services provided by meteorological organisations that are relevant to inland waters, including weather forecasts, hydrological data, climate data, snow and ice data, evaporation rates.
Activities
- WP1- Project coordination and management. WP1 is aimed to establish an effective and ethical financial and technical management of the project. Also to monitor and adjust the implementation plan and establish effective communication channels (consortium-Commission).
- WP2- Stakeholder engagement for the co-creation of the inland waters Digital Twin. WP2 aims to coordinate and support the engagement of relevant stakeholders including researchers, water industry operators, users like river basin agencies, water agencies, etc. in Multi-Stakeholders Forums for the co-creation of the project solutions and the definition of viable use cases.
- WP3- OpenKIWAS: Open Knowledge Inventory for Inland Water Systems. WP3 aims to comprehensively map the regulatory, research, and data landscape of inland water management by analysing policies, cataloguing scientific and technological advancements, and creating inventories of open data and meteorological services for potential digital twin applications.
- WP4- Reference Architecture for interoperable inland water Digital Twin. WP4 aims to define the architectural concept and design, as a reference architecture, for the integration of inland waters in the DTO.
- WP5- IDEATION roadmap and recommendations. WP5 aims to map the recommendations from WP2 and WP4 and the inventory made in WP3; and develop a roadmap for the implementation of the DT for inland waters.
- WP6- Dissemination, exploitation, communication, and networking. WP6 aims to produce a strategic dissemination, exploitation, and communication plan together with an IDEATION brand.
Expected results
As a result of the IDEATION project the catalogue OpenKIWAS will be available online as well as comprehensive roadmap and the reference architecture. The set of recommendations for the future development of the digital twin will be shared with EC and the lessons learnt during the project will be openly available.
