Cavicchia Leone

Leone Cavicchia is a Scientist in the Climate Simulation and Prediction Division at CMCC.

He has 10+ years of experience on climate extremes and climate modelling. A particular focus of his research has been the study of tropical-like cyclones in the Mediterranean Sea (medicanes) and of subtropical cyclones on the East coast of Australia. He has contributed to the development of a regional coupled ocean-atmosphere system and to the production of climate simulations for the CORDEX Project.

He has been a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia in 2017-2020 and a long-term visitor at the Helmolt-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) in Germany. He holds a PhD in “Science and Management of Climate Change” from the Cà Foscari University of Venice and a Master’s degree in Theoretical Physics from La Sapienza University of Rome.

He has been involved in numerous research programs and project both a the international (e.g. Med-CORDEX and HyMeX) and national level in Italy and Australia (the Earth Systems anc Climate Change Hub of the NESP program).

The main focus of his current research is the use of Artificial Intelligence to improve the predictions and projections of extreme events.
