Abstract
Marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the Mediterranean Sea are increasingly intense and frequent, posing severe risks to marine ecosystems and coastal economies. Despite their growing impact, there are substantial challenges in accurately detecting these events, understanding their underlying drivers, and forecasting their future occurrences. This presentation will address these challenges by reviewing recent studies, led or co-led by CMCC, focused on the detection and forecasting of MHWs. Furthermore, the presenter will explore the key atmospheric factors driving these events and highlight the crucial role of modeling techniques. Within the framework of European projects such as ObsSea4Clim, FutureMARES and ACTNOW, significant efforts are being made to enhance Earth System Models and coupled biogeochemical-ocean models. These advancements are crucial for improving our understanding of marine heatwaves and evaluating their impacts. By enhancing our predictive capabilities and understanding, we can better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of these critical marine phenomena, ultimately helping to protect the Mediterranean’s delicate environment and economy.
