ICR Webinar
20 March 2025, h. 14:00
Welcome: Guido Rianna, CMCC
Speaker: Annamaria Mazzoni, CMCC
Moderator: Jenny Lawler, DCU Water Institute
In hyper-arid environments, groundwater serves as a critical, yet often overlooked, resource for sustaining ecosystems, economies, and communities. However, increasing pressures from climate change, land-use shifts, and over-extraction threaten its long-term sustainability. How can groundwater resources be effectively quantified, modeled, and governed while considering socio-economic realities? This webinar will explore innovative water budget modeling, integrating scenario-based forecasting, stakeholder-driven narratives, and technological innovations to shape policy-relevant solutions. Using a system dynamics modeling (SDM) approach, the session will highlight the development of a decision support system (DSS) for national-scale water resource management (WRM), applied to the Qatar case study. The session will also demonstrate how what-if simulations and co-designed adaptation strategies can inform sustainable water policies, balancing conservation, supply diversification, and economic viability. Findings from Qatar’s WRM study will illustrate real-world trade-offs, showing how strategic interventions can extend water sustainability and enhance resilience in arid regions.
