Abstract:
After giving a broad overview of the current research efforts aimed at a better understanding and prediction of climate/weather extremes in Australia, I will focus on cyclones, that are one of the primary causes of economic losses related to natural disasters in the region. It is well known that the northern part of the country is seasonally affected by the occurrence of tropical cyclones. The east coast of Australia, where the majority of population and economic activities are located, is on the other hand affected year-round by the occurrence of a different kind of cyclones, that are much less understood. Known as east coast lows (ECLs), such low pressure systems have mixed tropical and extra-tropical features. Efforts to derive a physically- based classification of ECLs started only very recently. I will show some results from such effort, focusing in particular on the analysis of cyclones structure, and of the processes responsible for the storm intensification.I will conclude by discussing the results in the wider context of projected tropical expansion, and by showing some potential applications of the diagnostics developed in the study in different regions.
