The first European climate science summit is taking place in Brussels on March 21 – 22, 2023, organized by JPI Climate and MAGICA project. CMCC takes part in the Equinox Summit, the event aimed at responding to the urgency of climate change by accelerating the transfer of knowledge from science to policy and practice.
On Monday 20 March, 2023 the IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change through its Chair Hoesung Lee underscored “the urgency of taking more ambitious action” and showed that, “if we act now, we can still secure a liveable sustainable future for all.”
Responding to this urgency, called for by the IPCC, JPI Climate and MAGICA Project have organised the Equinox Summit on March 21 and 22, 2023: a meeting between representatives of the European scientific community and representatives of Member State ministries and EU institutions.
The event, which is being held at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, will be an opportunity to agree on how to improve the capacity for the production and use of scientific information for climate policy-making in Europe. In particular, on the table is the proposal to establish a process to systematically update scientific information for policy and actions via a European scientific assessment and stocktaking process, operating on a two-year cycle.
Given its role within the JPI Climate and the coordination of the MAGICA project, the CMCC Foundation is participating in the meeting. MAGICA project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, will take forward what emerges at the end of the Equinox Summit proceedings. The project aims to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) for climate science, intensifying the opportunities for exchange between the world of politics and the world of scientific research.
