At Ecomondo 2024, CMCC showcased its commitment to coastal resilience, sharing scientific insights and engaging in discussions to drive forward sustainable, innovative solutions within the framework of the circular economy and environmental policy.

CMCC scientists actively contributed to Ecomondo 2024, one of the leading international expos on the green and circular economy, which took place in Rimini, Italy, from November 5 to 8. The event provided a crucial forum for discussions on environmental technologies and the role of innovative solutions in addressing sustainability challenges across water management, waste treatment, soil regeneration, and bioenergy sectors.

CMCC’s strategic research and leadership were highlighted through its involvement, particularly in the UN Decade Collaborative Center for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR) sessions. These sessions, held under the theme “The Power of Science for Coastal Communities: Better Informed, Better Prepared,” spanned four days, covering themes from governance and scientific support for coastal resilience to capacity building and future strategies. Each session featured keynote addresses by leading CMCC scientists and international experts, with discussions emphasizing the intersection of research, policy, and community engagement.

Key CMCC contributions included talks on critical subjects such as governance challenges surrounding sea level rise in Europe, and innovative coastal monitoring and forecasting systems for early warning, presented by CMCC scientists Elisa Fiorini Beckhauser and Viviana Piermattei, respectively.

Giovanni Coppini, Director of the Global coasts as a new frontier program at CMCC, offered insights into solutions for coastal resilience and adaptation, while Giulia Galluccio, Director of the Information Systems for Climate Science and Decision-Making Division at CMCC, underscored the importance of education through initiatives like the FERS School on Sea Level Rise in Bertinoro.

The event also facilitated virtual engagement with the launch of the first European assessment report of the Knowledge Hub on Sea Level Rise, presented by Giulia Galluccio and Nadia Pinardi, DCC-CR Director and a member of the Strategy Council at CMCC.

Monia Santini, Director of the Institute for Climate Resilience at CMCC, also contributed to Ecomondo 2024 as a keynote speaker at an event organized by the CL.A.N. Cluster in collaboration with the Ecomondo Technical-Scientific Committee. Her speech, focusing on the impact of climate change on Italy’s agri-food system, emphasized the need for holistic approaches that bring together various stakeholders to develop innovative and tailored strategies, aligning with European policies on circular economy and environmental protection.

Through its active presence, CMCC reaffirmed the importance of evidence-based science as a cornerstone for developing resilient and adaptive solutions to global climate challenges.
