Dr. Anna Pirani is a senior research associate of the CMCC research division “Risk assessment and adaptation strategies”. She is working on international, European, national and local climate risk assessment and climate policies, in particular to inform adaptation and build resilience. She is working on the assessment of climate risks at the regional scale, and development of a standardised yet flexible framework and toolbox for the Horizon Europe project “CLIMAte risk and vulnerability Assessment framework and toolboX (CLIMAAX). She worked on the first European climate risk assessment (EUCRA), in particular the development and coordination of storylines on climate risks that require European-scale coordination and management. Anna is a member of the Italian delegation of the Ministry for the environment and energy security (MASE) for UNFCCC negotiations providing scientific and technical support for climate policy development and negotiations on topics that include climate change, impacts and risk, adaptation, migration, mitigation ambition and net zero emissions targets. She is EU lead negotiator on UNFCCC Research and Systematic Observations. Anna also provides support for G20 and G7 negotiations, recently working on the development and implementation of the G7 legacy initiative of the Italian presidency, the Adaptation Accelerator Hub.

Anna is the IPCC Focal Point for Italy (alternate), representing Italy in IPCC plenary sessions and meetings, connecting the national scientific and policymaking communities to the IPCC, and carrying out communication and dissemination activities regarding IPCC activities.

She was previously the Head of the IPCC Working Group I Technical Support Unit until the completion of the Sixth Assessment Report cycle in July 2023. She is an executive editor of the 2018 IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5oC and the AR6 Working Group I 2021 Climate Report. She has led the TSU team co-located in France and China of operations, science, data, communications, graphics, IT, with external contractors since 2016. Her responsibilities have included strategic and scientific assessment oversight, including design and successful running of the first ever virtual IPCC approval session, as well as strategic communications, visual design, and outreach tailored to international, regional and national stakeholders, experts and the public. She is contributed to the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments, leading the guidance for the implementation of FAIR principles in the IPCC process, and was a member of the IPCC Gender Action Team.

Her background is in oceanography and climate science with a particular interest in scenarios of possible futures of climate, impacts and risks, adaptation and socio-economic futures.
